Top dressing grass along side walk edges

If you ever walk through your neighborhood, you'll notice the edges of the sidewalk get dry and weak during the heat of the summer. This is usually caused by the sand and gravel they put down to compact under the sidewalk. Next to the sidewalk, the sod is laid on top of the sand, and the sand won't retain water long enough to give grass roots access to it for long. The sidewalks also heat up during those 100-degree days, and the water will evaporate faster and become drought-stricken faster. Top dressing grass by applying light layers of compost or potting soil into the grass over time will help build up those spots to retain water and withstand the hot summer months.
